Hello and welcome to Boriqua Blog. As you may or may not know, I am technically challenged, so this is going to be quite an adventure for me as well as anyone! The site (and by extension, this Blog) will be a work in progress, and we hope that we can take it in a direction that you will determine with your input.

For people who know me from Daisy Cooks!, you know that my approach is pretty much to invite you into my kitchen…I’m widening the parameters now, and invite you into my life. I will take you on vacations with my family, holiday celebrations, traditions in my home, street festivals, birthday parties…in short, all things Daisy…and by all means, if there is something on your calender that I should be aware of (concerts, events, international festivals) please let me know here on Boriqua Blog. Hola y bienvenidos a Boriqua Blog. La verdad es que no soy experta en computadoras, así que esto va a ser una aventura tanto para mi, como para todos ustedes.! Mi página de internet, y por supuesto mi blog, son un trabajo en progreso, y esperamos que sus opiniones y comentarios nos ayuden a mejorar.

Las personas que me conocen a través de Daisy Cooks!, saben que mi mayor felicidad es recibirlos en mi cocina, pero he decidido extender los parámetros y hacerlos partícipe también en mi vida.. Me acompañaran, junto a mi familia, durante vacaciones, días de fiesta, a festivales, a cumpleaños, o sea, serán parte de todo lo relacionado conmigo.

Al mismo tiempo, si se enteran de un evento, fiesta, festival, o concierto del cual debo saber, por favor tengan la confianza de compartirlo conmigo.

About Daisy Martinez

Daisy Maria Martinez was born to mainland Puerto Rican parents in Brooklyn, New York, where she lived at her grandmother’s house until she was almost five years old. Between her grandmother, Valentina, and her mother, Conchita, Daisy learned that the kitchen is the happiest room in the household, filled with love, family, and delicious food. With an extended family of relatives from Central America, Spain, and other parts of the Spanish-speaking world, Daisy also grew up appreciating the diversity of Latin cuisine. Prior to entering the food world, Daisy was an actress and model. She became the “Martinez Valero” Girl (no relation) when the Spanish shoe company decided to compete with Italy in the American market. Daisy was also featured in American commercials for several products including Ford, and in Spanish-language commercials for AT&T. She has also appeared in several movies, including “Carlito’s Way” and “Scent of a Woman”.

Daisy met her husband, Jerry, while attending Long Island University. After marrying, Daisy dedicated herself to raising her family, for whom she often hosted festive gatherings with delicious food.

Seven years ago, over dinner one night at the French Culinary Institute restaurant L’Ecole, Daisy’s husband told her that he was sending her to cooking school for her birthday – a dream that Daisy had always wanted to pursue. In 1998 Daisy matriculated at the French Culinary Institute, where she won first prize for her final project, “The Passionate Palate”. Shortly after graduation, Daisy worked on the set of PBS’ Lidia’s Italian-American Kitchen as a prep-kitchen chef, and as a private chef in New York City, which she did for 3 years. In addition, Daisy managed a small catering business, “The Passionate Palate”, which she continues to operate.

While celebrating life and family through food, Daisy is also intensely proud of her Puerto Rican heritage and is very active in the Latino community, where she visits schools as a featured speaker and participates in philanthropic events. Daisy’s embrace of her cultural roots and knowledge of the broad spectrum of Latin cuisine are vividly communicated through Daisy Cooks!, her highly rated PBS television program and popular cookbook, an IACP nominee and winner of the Best Latino Cuisine Cookbook in the World by the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, of the same name.

Daisy fue actriz y modelo. De hecho, Daisy modelo para la exclusiva marca de zapatos españoles Martinez Valero (sin relación) cuando la compañia decidió competir por el mercado Americano con Italia. Daisy protagonizó comerciales para varios productos y compañias como la Ford, y AT& T para la television hispana. También participó en películas como “Carlito’s Way” y “Scent of a Woman”.

Daisy conoció a su esposo Jerry, mientras estudiaba en la Universidad de Long Island en NY. Después de casarse, Daisy se dedicó por completo a su familia, y a recibir amigos y familiares en ocasiones especiales con platillos deliciosos.

Hace unos siete años, durante la cena de su cumpleaños en el restaurant L’Ecole localizado en el Instituto Culinario Frances de la ciudad de Nueva York (French Culinary Institute, siglas FCI), Jerry le regaló a Daisy una beca par estudiar cocina en el mismo. En 1998, Daisy inició sus clases en el Instituto, donde ganó el primer premio con su projecto de graduación “El Paladar Apasionado”. Poco después de la graduación Daisy formó parte del equipo culinario tras bambalinas, de la popular serie de PBS, Lidia’s Italian American Kitchen, además de trabajar como chef personal en la ciudad de Nueva York, por unos 3 años.

Daisy esta muy orgullosa de sus raíces puertorriqueñas, y lo demuestra celebrando a diario la vida y la familia a través de la cocina, además de contribuir regularmente con la comunidad, ya sea visitando escuelas , como participando en eventos de índole filantrópicos.
Su amor, y respeto por sus raíces culturales están reflejados en su programa Daisy Cooks!, el cual goza de mucha popularidad, además de a través de su libro del mismo nombre, ganador de varios premios y nominaciones (incluyendo, nominación al premio IACP, y el premio al Mejor Libro de Cocina Latina del Mundo otorgado por el Gourmand World Cookbook.
